Quick answer

What is answer engine optimisation and what should a professional services firm publish?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) mean writing pages so that AI search and assistants can extract and cite them. Google states that no special markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode [1]. A firm publishes definition blocks, dated figures, named authors, visible FAQs and open search bots.

Answer engine optimisation for professional services firms: cover

A finance director asks an assistant which firm can register a company and clear a licence in Tanzania. The assistant composes one answer from a few pages. A firm whose pages open with a positioning statement supplies nothing to quote. This note sets out what AEO and GEO mean, what Google, OpenAI and Anthropic document, what the 2023 GEO paper found and what a professional services firm should publish.

What do AEO and GEO mean?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of writing pages so that a search engine or assistant can lift a direct answer from them. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the term the 2023 paper of that name gives to improving the visibility of content in generative engine responses 5. Google's own guide calls the area optimizing for generative AI features 1.

How do answer engines pick sources?

Google documents that content must be crawlable, indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode 12. These features may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response 2. OpenAI and Anthropic each document separate bots for search, user requests and training 78.

The GEO paper tested nine methods on GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries, and reports visibility gains of up to 40 per cent 5. Quotation addition, statistics addition and cite sources were among the best performers, and keyword stuffing scored below the unoptimised baseline 5. The paper is a preprint from November 2023, version 3 of June 2024, and tests its own benchmark, not any named product.

Which crawlers decide whether a firm is visible?

Documented bots and the effect of blocking each [2][7][8]
OperatorBotPurposeEffect of blocking
OpenAIOAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT searchSite is absent from ChatGPT search answers
OpenAIGPTBotContent that may train modelsSignals content is not for training

AnthropicClaude-UserFetches pages when a user asksPrevents retrieval for user queries
AnthropicClaudeBotContent that may train modelsExcludes future content from training

A firm that blocks search bots to protect content from training also removes itself from the answer, so the decision is made bot by bot. OpenAI states that a robots.txt change for search can take about 24 hours 7. Anthropic states that blocking IP addresses may not reliably opt a site out, because it stops the bots from reading robots.txt 8.

What should a Tanzanian professional services firm publish?

  1. Definition blocks The first paragraph of each service page states what the service is, who needs it and which body decides, in 40 to 60 words.
  2. Dated figures Every fee, threshold and deadline carries the authority and the date it was read, in the manner of the GEO paper's statistics and citation methods 5.
  3. Named authors A byline with a role and a link to an author page; Google strongly encourages accurate authorship information 4.
  4. Visible FAQ Questions a client asks, with self-contained answers on the page.
  5. Structured data JSON-LD for the organisation with legalName, taxID, foundingDate, founder, address, contactPoint and sameAs 6, describing only what is visible on the page 3.
  6. Bot access A robots.txt that admits the search bots in the table.

Is structured data or an llms.txt file needed?

Not for Google. Its guide states that structured data is not required for generative AI search, that no special schema.org markup is needed, and that llms.txt files are ignored by Google Search 1. Structured data still helps pages qualify for rich results, and Google recommends JSON-LD while accepting Microdata and RDFa 13. The OpenAI and Anthropic pages read document robots.txt controls 78.

How is a firm's page-by-page extractability scored?

Each page earns one point per feature in the list above: definition block, dated figure, named author, visible FAQ, structured data and open search bots. The score is an internal checklist. No search or answer engine publishes it, and no score predicts a citation.

What the NEMBO desk prepares

The website desk delivers the sitemap, schema for the organisation and each service, sitemap.xml submitted and a Google Business Profile that matches the page 9. Zatra Consultants Limited checks each licence route, fee and statutory statement before publication 9. The Build package is from TZS 3,500,000 or USD 4,500, with 50 per cent starting the work, and a standard site of up to nine pages takes fifteen working days 9.

For a monthly programme, the Mandate package is TZS 4,200,000 or USD 6,000: twenty pieces with copy, a landing page, SEO and AEO work from a technical audit at onboarding and then a page a month against a keyword map 10. SEO is never sold standalone, and no first-page ranking is promised 10.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is the practice of writing pages so an engine can lift a direct answer. GEO is the term used by the 2023 paper for improving visibility in generative engine responses [5]. In practice both ask for the same pages: clear definitions, cited figures and named authors.

Does a firm need special markup to appear in Google's AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet [2]. Structured data is not required for generative AI search [1].

Should a firm block GPTBot and ClaudeBot?

That decision protects content from training and is separate from visibility. OpenAI documents GPTBot for training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search [7]. Anthropic documents ClaudeBot for training and Claude-SearchBot for search [8]. A firm blocks the training bots and admits the search bots if it wants both.

Does keyword stuffing help in answer engines?

No. In the GEO paper keyword stuffing scored below the unoptimised baseline, while quotation addition, statistics addition and cite sources were among the best methods tested [5].

Is an llms.txt file worth adding?

Google states that it ignores llms.txt files for Search and that they neither help nor hurt visibility there [1]. The OpenAI and Anthropic pages read document robots.txt, not llms.txt [7][8].

Who should be named as the author of a service page?

The adviser who is accountable for the content, with role and a link to an author page. Google strongly encourages accurate authorship information and warns against fabricated profiles [4].
