Quick answer

What should a monthly management accounts board pack contain, and when is it due?

A board pack issued within ten working days of month end carries the income statement against budget, balance sheet, cash flow, KPIs and written variance commentary. For the month ended 31 August 2026, ten working days ends on 14 September 2026. No standard fixes the number of days, because IAS 34 leaves timing to regulators [1].

Monthly management accounts: what a board pack must carry: cover

A board meets on the third Thursday and receives the previous month's numbers the evening before, in a spreadsheet with no commentary. Directors cannot test a figure they see for the first time, and an investor reading the same file cannot tell a timing difference from a trend.

A monthly pack fixes that with a set content and a set date. This note lists the content, tests the ten-working-day date against a calendar, shows which standards apply and which do not, and computes one variance table with its commentary.

What should a board receive each month?

A board receives the income statement against budget, the balance sheet, the cash flow statement, a short set of KPIs and written commentary on every material variance, issued on a fixed working day after month end. No standard fixes that day, and the board sets it. This note uses ten working days.

Do IAS 1 and IAS 34 govern a monthly pack?

No standard sets the content or timing of a monthly pack. IAS 34 states that it does not mandate which entities publish interim financial reports, how often, or how soon after the end of the period; that is for governments, securities regulators and stock exchanges 12. IAS 1 sets the overall requirements for presentation and minimum content of financial statements 3.

The structure of IAS 34 is still a sound template. Its minimum interim components are condensed statements of financial position, performance, changes in equity and cash flows, with selected notes, and measurement is on a year-to-date basis, with the position compared against the last year end 2. A pack built the same way reconciles to the annual accounts at year end.

What do NBAA and the CMSA guidelines expect?

TFRS 1 expects the annual report to carry information on budget performance, including a description of how the entity attained its budget 4. The monthly variance table is the working paper behind that paragraph. NBAA's Technical Pronouncement No. 1 of 2018 assigns the framework by entity, and the pack names the one that applies 6.

For listed companies, the Capital Markets and Securities Authority guidelines recommend that the board oversee management accounts and review performance at least quarterly, and that the audit committee review the going concern assumption at quarterly, half-yearly and year-end reviews 5. A monthly pack gives three reviews inside each quarter. Section 4 of the guidelines is framed as best practice that companies should endeavour to meet 5.

What does ten working days from month end mean on a calendar?

For the month ended 31 August 2026, a Monday, ten working days, counting Monday to Friday and excluding public holidays, ends on Monday 14 September 2026. The calendar below gives the five stages.

What should variance commentary say?

Each material variance states its size, its cause, whether it repeats, and the action. A variance of TZS 40 million on revenue is a number. The same variance split into volume and margin effects is a diagnosis.

What to do now

  1. Set the date Agree the working day for issue with the board, and put it in the board calendar.
  2. Fix the contents Adopt the five parts above, with one definition for each KPI.
  3. Close on a timetable Work back from the issue date to the ledger close.
  4. Write the commentary Cover every variance above a stated threshold.
  5. Reconcile to year end Keep the layout aligned with the annual statements.

What the NEMBO desk prepares

Zatra Consultants Limited authors and checks the figures, and NEMBO designs and delivers. The Client shares the ledger or trial balance, bank statements and debt schedules. The CFO pack returns with the reporting basis named, a verdict, ratios and an action list, a Lender and Board Brief of about ten pages, and an Excel working file with live formulas tied to the ledger 8. Fees are quoted in writing, and the written quote states the date for the scope agreed.

The pack is an illustrative management estimate, not an audit, an assurance report or a valuation, and it decides no lender's or investor's view.

Frequently asked questions

How many working days after month end should the pack be issued?

No standard fixes the number. IAS 34 leaves the timing of interim reports to governments, regulators and exchanges. This note uses ten working days, and the board sets its own. For August 2026 it ends on 14 September 2026.

Must a monthly pack follow IAS 34?

No. IAS 34 applies when an entity publishes an interim report and claims compliance with it. A monthly management pack is internal. Using its structure, with year-to-date figures and comparison with the last year end, keeps the pack consistent with the annual accounts.

What should a board pack contain at minimum?

The income statement against budget, the balance sheet, the cash flow statement, a short set of defined KPIs and written commentary on each material variance. The pack names its reporting framework, and each figure traces to the ledger.

What is a favourable or an adverse variance?

A variance is adverse when it reduces profit against the budget, such as revenue below budget or cost above it. It is favourable when it raises profit. The table in this note marks each line, so a reader does not infer the sign.

Why split a variance into volume and margin?

The split shows whether the shortfall comes from selling less or from earning less on each sale. In the example, 16.9 of the 52.0 gross profit shortfall is volume and 35.1 is margin, so the action sits on cost of sales.

Does a listed company have to review management accounts monthly?

The Capital Markets and Securities Authority guidelines recommend that the board oversee management accounts and review performance at least quarterly. A monthly pack is more frequent than that recommendation and supports the quarterly review.

Does the pack replace the accountant?

No. The entity's accountant closes the ledger and confirms the framework. The NEMBO pack is an illustrative management estimate prepared on the basis the accountant confirms, and it is not an audit, an assurance report or a valuation.
